In the heavy-duty pontoon undercarriage of an amphibious excavator, the sprocket and idler play distinct yet complementary roles. The sprocket, seamlessly integrated with the travel motor, serves as the active drive component. It transmits power by directly engaging with the track chain, propelling the machine through challenging terrains and demanding aquatic environments.

In contrast, the idler is a non-driven wheel positioned at the opposite end of the amphibious undercarriage. Its primary functions are to guide the track chain into a smooth, continuous circuit and, crucially, to maintain optimal track tension via an integrated recoil mechanism. This tension is vital for preventing slippage, minimizing derailment risk, and ensuring efficient power transfer.

To withstand the combined assault of abrasive forces, high shock loads, and corrosive water exposure, both components are forged from high-strength alloy steels (such as 40Cr) and undergo specialized heat treatment to achieve superior surface hardness and wear resistance.
