An amphibious excavator works in two extremes: long hours underwater and full sun on land.

Summer heat and rainy humidity create a double challenge. Overheating. Rust. Electrical failure.

Proper excavator maintenance is the key to avoiding costly breakdowns. This guide shows you how to protect your swamp buggy in both seasons.

Amphibious Excavator in Dredging Applications

Part 1: Hot Summer – Prevent Overheating

Summer pushes your amphibious excavator hard. High temperatures strain the engine, hydraulics, and wiring. Without regular excavator maintenance, these parts will fail early.

1. Engine: Stop It from Boiling

Watch the water temperature gauge. When it hits 90°C, take action.

Checklist:

  • Coolant level and quality – top up or replace with the same type.
  • Radiator fins – clean off dust, mud,willow catkins,grass clippings,and debris,.
  • Fan belt tension – ensure it is tight. Check water pump and thermostat.

If the engine overheats: Let it idle to cool down. Do not shut it off immediately. Never pour cold water on a hot engine.

2. Hydraulic System – Oil Temperature Control

Hot hydraulic oil becomes thin. It can cause valve sticking and hose bursts.

  • Use 46or 68 grade anti – wear oil in summer. (Winter uses 32 or 46.)
  • Check oil level and quality daily. Replace if black or bubbly.
  • Clean the hydraulic oil cooler surface every day.
  • Avoid long overload operation.

3. Lubrication – Grease More Often

Heat thins lubricants. This speeds up wear on the undercarriage and swing bearing.

Apply grease to all grease nipples, working device pins, and the slewing ring more frequently than in cool weather. Use high – viscosity multi – grade engine oil (such as 15W – 40) for the summer. This simple excavator maintenance step saves major repair costs.

4. Electrical System – Watch for Aging Wires

Heat expands and contracts wires. Old insulation cracks, causing shorts.

Inspect wire harness connections. Look for loose terminals. Check battery posts for oxidation. Keep control boxes out of direct sunlight – add shade or heat insulation.

5. Operation Tips – Avoid the Midday Heat

Try not to work continuously from 11:00 to 15:00. Stop every 2 hours and let the engine idle to cool down.

Do not park your swamp buggy in blazing sun without covering exposed parts like the exhaust pipe.

6. Parking Advice

Park in a cool, dry place. Cover the machine to keep debris out.

Part 2: Rainy Season – Stop Water and Rust

Water is the enemy of any amphibious excavator. It causes short circuits, oil emulsification, and rust inside the pontoons. Good excavator maintenance in rainy season focuses on dryness and corrosion protection.

1. Chassis and Pontoons – Check Seals Daily

The twin – pontoon design has multiple sealed compartments. But seals can fail.

  • After each shift, wash off mud and sand from the pontoons and undercarriage.
  • Inspect seal rings for cracks or water entry.
  • RIVERuses Q345B steel + sandblasting + marine-grade anti-rust paint. This boosts corrosion resistance by 50%. Still, apply maintenance oil to key areas after rainy work.

2. Electrical System – Dry It Out

Rain can flood control boxes and relay panels. Use a dry cloth or even paper to wipe out moisture. Spray a drying agent if needed.

If the engine won’t start after rain, the ignition system may be leaking electricity. Check it immediately.

3. Hydraulic System – Check for Emulsification

Look at the hydraulic oil. If it looks milky white, water has entered. Change the oil and filter right away.

After working in water, rinse the hydraulic valve group with clean water.

4. Tighten All Bolts

Rain and mud can loosen undercarriage bolts. Check and tighten all fasteners. Also inspect chain tension and seals.

5. Operating in Rain / Parking

  • Ensure the water depth and wave condition do not exceed the machine’s rated buoyancy and stability limits.
  • After rain, turn off the master power switch. Check fuel and hydraulic tank caps for sealing. Also check the engine oil dipstick and filler cap.

Park on high ground with good drainage. Avoid long – term water soaking.

6. Paint Maintenance

Rainwater is acidic. Touch up any scraped paint to prevent rust. This extends machine life.
